A Dugong is a mammal that lives in the sea. This animal inspired sailors to tell tales about mermaids. Lonely sailors have been known to have gotten intimate with the dugong.

Dugongs grow up to 3m in length and weigh up to 400kg - as much as a cow!
Dugong are hunted for food.
So there you have it. Thats your mermaid.

Fishermen catching fish along the East African coast had to take oaths after fishing the dugong. They had to swear that "no harm" was done to the caught dugongs before the dugongs found their way to the fish market.

Dugongs are rarely captured alive. Most of them get trapped in the fishermens nets ... being mammals they from time to time need to come to the surface for air.
